Downtown Manassas Fall Wedding at Virginia Portuguese Community Center | A and M | Wedding Photographer in Manassas and Woodbridge, VA

The couple incorporated their Spanish tradition into their beautiful wedding. One of them is the wedding lasso tradition which was performed after the exchange of vows using a lasso or rope to join the couple. Traditionally found in Catholic weddings, the wedding lasso is a large rosary, placed over the couple’s shoulders by either the officiant or los padrinos (godparents) and symbolizes their everlasting union and status as one in the eyes of the Lord. The lasso ceremony can have a similar meaning as the lighting of a unity candle, also used in many Catholic weddings.

The other Spanish/Hispanic tradition which I noticed was performed at the wedding reception was The Sea Snake Dance, or La Vibora De La Mar. The wedding couple stood on opposite chairs using the bride’s veil to create an arch. Traditionally, this is done two times. One for all the female guests and the other for all the male guests. When the music starts (usually a song called vibora de la mar) guests pass under the arch while holding hands and running around the reception room. The couple must not break the arch. As the music gets faster, it gets increasingly more difficult for the couple to keep it together as guests will try to break the arch. This tradition looked so much fun and it engaged everyone together! I had a great time capturing this fun wedding as a second photographer for Lina Pics.
